CHAPTER 16

The thing was yellow and slimy and looked like a giant man-eating starfish. Its fat arms waved as it rose behind her, higher and higher, until it was as wide as the aisle and as tall as the ceiling.

My voice caught. “Behind. YOU!”

My demon hand and I both pointed. DeeDee turned around. The yellow thing zeroed in on her. Its fat arms shook, rattling like a venomous snake.

Oh God. It's gonna attack! I scanned the end caps, looking for a weapon.

DeeDee huffed and jabbed her thumb toward the beer cave. “Another walk of shame, huh? The gate is that way.”

The thing rattled again, then rolled away. It didn't attack. It didn't put up any sort of fight at all. It oozed and gyrated its slimy, gelatinous arms one by one through the beer cave door. It only stopped once, to look back at us with what must have been a face, before it finally managed to squeeze through. I swear it blushed bright orange.

“What was THAT?”

“That is what happens when Bubby slums it on Shagging Shoggoths. That's the third one tonight. Back to back trashy hookups. I asked him to try the classy apps first, but no. None of you ever listen to ME.” She stomped away, mad.

I just stood there because I still had questions. A lot of questions. Like, why was DeeDee so angry? And was Bubby the one grunting like a rutting walrus in the red room?

Yep. Barry is a total pervert. Into some weird stuff. That poor bug didn't know what hit him.

“His name is Bubby, not Barry.”

Uh huh. Keep telling yourself that.

“You. Make yourself useful.” Kevin slapped a tape measure into my hand, grabbed the tab, and pulled it out as he walked down the coolers to Bubby's TV. “Since you're still here, you can help Gary make room for the hot tub.”

Gary? He stood in the corner, white as a sheet, soaked in sweat, eyes glued to the beer cave. I recognized that look. He had seen. Because right there on his shirt was a teeny tiny name tag with “Kevin” crossed off and “Gary” written in.

“Really, Kevin? This is my job,” I huffed. “Go home, Gary. You're in over your head.”

Gary didn't move. He clung to that wall for dear life.

“You're not going anywhere, Gary. But I'm not paying you to stand around, so get started on my cabana,” Kevin said. Then he turned to me, put up a leg and whispered, “Can't pay him anyway. I spent payroll on the hot tub. Heh heh.”

Oh my God. There was so much wrong with that statement. So so much. But we had more immediate problems. “Forget the hot tub. Are you blind? I'm possessed and DeeDee quit school. Something is wrong!”

“I'm not blind. I can see the three-day-old pizza roll stuck to your shirt. I'm embarrassed for you.”

“Gah! Forget the shirt. DeeDee dropped out of college. Hello! That's proof. That isn't like her at all!”

“Pfft. It's the best thing that ever happened to me.
